How to Haggle Properly

Haggling can be difficult, especially for those that are very kind-hearted and good natured.

Sellers will often talk about how they are extremely poor, have children to feed, or they have some sort of problem. They will also often openly lie about the product in open markets. For example, in Thailand someone might say they are the only sellers of a particular product or that it is hand made. You can easily check this by looking at multiple shops and looking for that product. Most of the time, you'll find it.

 - Start about 60% below what you view as a good bargain or fair price.
 - After you are close to your buying target, walking away or threatening to go to a different seller usually works.
 - If the product is for sale at many locations in a market, you can be more aggressively and openly walk off.

This article is written mainly for outdoor markets that are generally uncommon in the United States. The same principles can be used, though not as aggressively in the U.S.
